About Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a unique city for its balance between a European style and the Latino American economic and cultural reality. Its varied and accessible cultural events, and the charm of its everyday life make Buenos Aires a fascinating city. For a long time it was a very expensive city, but now one has the opportunity to discover it and live it for more than convenient prices.

Having dinner

In Buenos Aires is really easy to find all type of food. In fact, there are two modern neighbourhoods, Palermo Soho and Las Cañitas where there are lots of “ethnic” restaurants which offer all sort of food: Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, Scandinavian and so on. But when Argentines choose a place to eat, they prefer the “bodegones”, these are less sophisticated restaurants with accessible menus and well served plates. The “bodegones” are those restaurants which you will find in old neighbourhoods, traditional in our city and that few tourists know, but they really describe the porteños’ eating culture.

The city and its discos

For Buenos Aires’ habitants a disco is called “boliche”. Night life in the city is very lively and the “boliches” open their doors at 2 am and party goes on until 7 or 8 am. You can go to these “boliches” from Wednesday to Sunday and it will be a wonderful experience.

Buenos Aires and Tango

It is said that tango is a “sad thought that is danced”. During the last few years lots of argentines are interested in learning how to dance tango and listening to typical tango orchestras or even electronic tango. Good dancers don’t like tourists’ places but prefer the “milongas”: these are places where dancing tango is a very serious matter with specific codes for the dancing place and the tables.

Stadiums

Football is an argentine passion which is expressed in all stadiums as a big folklore. It is common for tourists to watch a match of the most important teams. But if you want this to be a unique experience, you should watch the match from the popular seats where the fans sing and jump during all the game. You can also go to better seats which are more comfortable but with less emotion than in the popular ones.

The people

We call “porteños” to does who live in Buenos Aires. There are lots of stereotypes for the “porteños”: we are a bit arrogant, we know everything about anything, very sympathetic and very curious about foreigners. All these stereotypes are true and false at the same time. But there is one type of “porteño” from which you have to be careful: the “chanta”. A kind of professional liar, very forthcoming and sympathetic, which obtains benefits out of every situation and person he meets.
